Donations
Ghana Together asks for your help on projects in Axim. It's 2011, and we've been collaborating with Western Heritage Home in Axim for five years. Our Milestones page summarizes how we've put donations directly to work. WHH started their local non-profit to improvement their own community. We formed ours to give them a hand up. It's working beyond our or their expectations. Thanks for the help!

Here are things we’ve come to know about how best to help our Ghanaian friends:
We are cautious about sending material “stuff” to Axim. Material possessions among Axim folks, especially children, are few. To avoid undercutting local businesses, we bring only items that are necessary or highly desirable, but not reasonably available for purchase there. We like items that will advance learning such as One Laptop Per Child computers, solar-powered scientific calculators, children's books, or educational games. The most useful donation is money, to be honest. We wire safely (no extra fees for overweight luggage, or hassles with customs, etc.). Spending money in Axim supports the local economy. Even modest amounts go far in a country where the per capita GDP is about $1000/yr (World Bank). Our partner, Western Heritage Home, has a good bookkeeping/receipt system in place. We receive financial reports via email about every two weeks. We receive monthly budgets from WHH management, discuss most expenditures by phone or internet, and monitor income and expenditures closely.
NEW PROJECTS: We have spec-ed out plans and are looking for donors for a
roof for six
classrooms (250 children about)
and a new six-room school in the poorest neighborhood where most of the
Muslim children in Axim attend (about 40% of the school population). Having successfully built the WHH facility, the first substantial
building since Ghana became independent, and one of the largest in town, we're confident that we can
successfully steer these large projects.
If you'd like to get involved, please contact us! We'd love to hear your ideas, suggestions, or proposals. We are learning as we go and welcome your insights. We believe we are a trustworthy conduit if you'd like to help the Axim community help itself.
Thank you!
